 Computer-aided translation (CAT)

We are not talking about machine translation - anathema to any self-respecting translator! - but rather translation memory technology, which enables every segment (sentence) translated by a human being to be stored in a database and retrieved if it reappears in a source text in the future. This is known as "recycling content".

CAT has three main benefits:
  • time saving: no need to start from scratch if the translator comes across a previously translated sentence
  • cost reduction: service providers who use this technology generally offer varying degrees of discounts on recycled content. You can therefore achieve economies of scale on repetitive or regularly-updated documents
  • consistency: thanks to sophisticated research tools, CAT software allows translators to retrieve every instance of a word or expression - and the corresponding translation - stored in a translation memory
You should be aware, however, that CAT software can only be used with editable documents (PDFs are therefore to be avoided, unless they are converted into Word documents using a professional tool).
