Translation - a job best left to the specialists

With the exception of general content, a quality translation requires in-depth knowledge of the field in question. It is therefore advisable to specialise, which means only targeting a (very) narrow segment of the market in order to best serve that segment's players. This is the price of providing a quality service.

Indeed, how could a translator possibly have an equally solid grasp of fields as diverse as medicine, law, the automobile industry and finance, to name but a few?

Specialisation requires considerable sacrifice, time and energy. It is a long and exacting process based on continuous training and terminological research, making it only logical that specialised translators charge higher rates than their non-specialised counterparts.

If your business is quite technical, opt for a translator specialised in your field. And make sure they really are specialists - it is not unusual to find service providers who claim to specialise in multiple fields... and therefore in none!
